Solar Scientist (Chemistry)

Energy Materials Corporation is seeking a talented and passionate scientist to develop thin film photovoltaic devices at our Rochester, NY facility. This exciting position will support the commercialization of perovskite-based solar modules for production on high-speed roll-to-roll coating and printing equipment.


  • Innovate next-generation optoelectronic inks for use in perovskite photovoltaics deposited at high speed
  • Conceive, plan, and execute experiments on lab scale and pilot scale coating and sintering equipment
  • Discover and demonstrate solutions to technical issues limiting performance of high efficiency photovoltaic devices
  • Support routine ink formulation for roll-to-roll development
  • Maintain high safety and housekeeping standards
  • Support other solar module development initiatives as needed


  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering; or M.S. and 5 or more years of experience in a relevant setting
  • Expert in one or more of the following:
    • Optoelectronic ink formulation
    • Interfacial chemistry
    • Multilayer solution deposition
    • Perovskite photovoltaic chemistry
  • Strong laboratory skills and advanced technical skills
  • Capable of planning and executing complex experiments and keeping detailed records
  • Driven, hands-on individual with strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work both independently and in a multi-disciplinary, multi-location team environment with ambitious goals and deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills: ability to compile and present data in clear, concise manner.
  • Excellent team rapport with all levels of the organization, and with external suppliers and consultants


  • Experience formulating inks for roll-to-roll coating
  • Knowledge of charge transport and perovskite photovoltaic materials
  • Track record of innovation and in solving complex technical problems
  • Understanding of thin film photovoltaic device operation and familiarity with solar cell/module fabrication methods
  • Proven work experience in relevant industry or startup
